Dr. Masaki is Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology and Supervisor of Master of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.) program at Concordia Theological Seminary, Ft. Wayne, Indiana. He teaches dogmatics, Lutheran Confessions, Luther studies, and liturgics. Dr. Masaki was born in Kobe, Japan, and was raised there as a son of a Lutheran pastor, a long time evangelist, church planter, seminary instructor, and speaker for the Lutheran Hour. He spent one year in Norway, graduated from Rødde Folkehøgskole near Trøndhelm in 1979. He attended Kwansei Gakuin University of Nishinomiya, Japan, and received B.A. (1985) and M.A. (1987) degrees in Social Work and Counseling. He then studied at Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne, receiving M.Div. (1991) with an emphasis on Missions studies and S.T.M. (1998) in Systematic Theology with minor in liturgics. His S.T.M. thesis was on the sacramental instruction of Dr. Luther in his Lectures on Genesis, 1535–1545. Dr. Masaki holds his Ph.D. in Doctrinal Theology from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis (2005). His dissertation introduces Dr. Theodor Kliefoth of the Confessional Revival of the nineteenth century into an English-speaking world and discusses a Lutheran theology of the Lord’s Supper that is characterized by Christo-centric gift-giving way of the means of grace, the office that serves the means of grace, as well as the vitality of Christian vocations. His study demonstrates a liturgical consequence of such theology in the Church of Sweden during the second half of the nineteenth century. Prior to joining the faculty in the spring of 2001, Dr. Masaki was ordained into the Office of the Holy Ministry on June 23, 1991, and served as Missionary-at-large to the Japanese people in northern New Jersey until the winter of 1997. He also served as a member of the Board for District and Congregational Services of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod in 1995–2004. Since 1998 he serves the Liturgy Committee of the Lutheran Hymnal Project, the Commission on Worship, LCMS. Dr. Masaki and his wife Yohko have been married since 1991 and have three children: Yoshitomo, Satomi, and Emi. |
