John T. Pless was born to Mr. and Mrs. John A. Pless of Conover, North Carolina on February 10, 1953. He graduated from Texas Lutheran College in 1975 with a B.A. in Theology and Philosophy. In 1979 he completed his M.Div. at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. While at Trinity, he also took graduate classes at the Pontifical College Josephenium and the Methodist School of Theology. From 1979 to 1983 Prof. Pless served as assistant to the dean of the chapel at Valparasio University. After completing colloquy courses at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne in 1983 he was called to serve as campus pastor at University Lutheran Chapel (University of Minnesota-Minneapolis). On January 21, 2000 he was called to serve as assistant professor of pastoral ministry and missions at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne. He is also the supervisor of the Field Education Program.
Prof. Pless is the author of two chapters in Lutheran Worship: History and Practice and of numerous articles in Logia, Concordia Theological Quarterly, Lutheran Quarterly, Lutheran Forum, Lutheran Witness, and other publications. He serves on the Agenda Committee for the Lutheran Hymnal Project and on the Synod's Board for Congregational Services. He is a regular speaker at various conferences and workshops on topics related to liturgy and catechesis.
