HIT 130   HISTORY OF THE EARLY CHURCH
This course introduces the student to the discipline of church history and offers an introduction to the life and thought of the Early Church. Emphasis is given to the emergence of institutional, theological and ethical patterns in the light of the contemporary social, cultural and intellectual environment. The student is introduced to the thought of major early fathers—Justin, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Origen, Cyprian, Athanasius and others. Attention is also given to the theological controversies and church councils of the 4th and 5th centuries which determined the formation of Christian belief.

HIT 131   HISTORY OF THE MEDIEVAL CHURCH
This course offers a survey of the history of the Christian Church from the Patristic to the Reformation. Attention is given to the transformation of antiquity to the Middle Ages, including the topics of the rise of Byzantium, the Teutonic invasions, the rise of Islam and the development of early Europe. Distinctly medieval realities such as Scholasticism and the evolution of the papal office receive emphasis. Also studied are medieval monastic, conciliar and reform movements.
