Required Courses

RES 100   BIBLIOGRAPHY AND TECHNOLOGY
The purpose of this course is to introduce all beginning students to the way the texts, tools, monographs and periodicals used for theological study are arranged in the library and how to access these using a variety of computer-based tools. Research skills and coping with information overload will also be emphasized. Note 19.

PMM 142   LUTHERAN WORSHIP
An introduction to the history of Christian worship including a thorough analysis of worship as reflected in Lutheran hymnody and liturgy. Each student demonstrates his ability to use the theological principles learned by preparing and leading both The Lutheran Hymnal and Lutheran Worship liturgies. Note 18.

PMM 143   HOMILETICS I
A study of the basic principles of sermon construction and writing. Special attention is given to expository preaching. Four credits. Notes 1, 18.

PMM 144   INTRODUCTION TO MISSIONS
A study of the biblical basis of God's mission and its implications for today. Examination and evaluation of the mission work of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod at home and abroad in the light of that basis. Methodology for developing the involvement of every Christian in Christ's mission. The life and work of cross-cultural witness.

Elective Courses

PMM P110   LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION
This course is designed to acquaint the student with the fundamental nature of language and communication. It deals with the multitude of linguistic elements and patterns that are used in a variety of languages to signal meaning. The goal is to build the kinds of attitudes and understandings about language that are most helpful for successful language usage and for effective communication.

PMM P115   MINISTRY TO THE DEAF I
An introduction to the world of the deaf, the psychology of deafness, audiology and the particular needs of the deaf. The Manual Alphabet is learned together with a limited word-sign vocabulary. The course is geared to fundamentals that any pastor will find helpful.

PMM P116   MINISTRY TO THE DEAF II
A continuation of course PMM P115 Ministry to the Deaf I, a more advanced study of the sign language methods used in educating the deaf. Practice in conducting worship services and religious instruction classes with deaf. Guidelines for serving isolated deaf in the congregation.

PMM P117   SPECIALIZING IN DEAF MINISTRY
This course specializes in conversation with the deaf, pastoral acts in the deaf congregation, preaching to the deaf, and interpreting for the deaf in both religious and secular contexts. A knowledge of sign language is required.

PMM P118   DEAF CULTURE & THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH
Students will participate in the Church Interpreter Training Institute where issues and topics pertaining to the deaf culture will be discussed to equip the student to better communicate the Gospel of Jesus to members of this culture. A research paper will be required to fulfill the requirements of this course. Note 16.

PMM P119   ASL AND THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH
Students will participate in the sessions of the Church Interpreter Training Institute where emphasis is put on vocabulary and interpreting techniques used in the context of the church as its mission is extended to members of the D/deaf community. A research paper will be required to fulfill the requirements of this course. Note 16.

PMM P121   SPANISH I: LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
An introduction to theological Spanish with special emphasis on the grammar and vocabulary employed in the main services of Culto Cristiano.

PMM P122   SPANISH II: LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
A continuation of study of theological Spanish with special emphasis on the grammar and vocabulary employed in the Catecismo Menor of Martin Luther.

PMM P123   SPANISH III: LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
A continuation of study of theological Spanish with special emphasis on the grammar and vocabulary employed in Culto Cristiano (using hymns which emanate from the early church, medieval church and orthodox Lutheranism).

PMM P131   CHAPEL CHOIR
This non-audition men’s chorus is open to all students. It rehearses two periods per week during the day as the academic schedule indicates and sings in daily chapel once a week, usually at Matins. Its repertory is of the Lutheran heritage that the average parish could perform. One-half credit. Note 4.

PMM P132   SCHOLA CANTORUM
This 50-voice audition-only mixed chorus of seminary family members presents five major choral Vespers per year, with Fort Wayne Philharmonic musicians. It performs medium to difficult repertory of the Lutheran heritage, including Cantatas, Passions and Choral-motets. One-half credit. Note 4.

PMM P133   SEMINARY KANTOREI
This audition-only men’s chorus rehearses daily at a time convenient for all 16 members. It presents one major choral Vespers per year and participates in the others and occasionally in chapel services. It performs the difficult repertory of the Lutheran heritage, tours during Christmas break, and sings in area congregations once per month. One-half credit. Note 4.

PMM P135   CHURCH WORK WITH YOUTH
This course seeks to develop an awareness of youth ministry in the parish as a part of God’s creation and of the Church. This is accomplished through study of a variety of youth group instructional models; youth group programming principles; leadership development in the parish youth group; the rich and diverse resources available in youth group ministry; and youth work techniques for use in a local parish youth group.

PMM P143   INTRODUCTION TO HISPANIC MINISTRY
Introduction to Missions proceeds from a study of the principles and practice of cross-cultural ministry in general to a focus on the particular concerns of the Hispanic ministry, including consideration of the culture of various Hispanic groups and religious trends within them. Note 14.
