Required Courses

PMM 440   PREACHING WORKSHOP
A seminar in which the returning vicar, with experience in preaching to the church, will, with the aid of professors and fellow students, analyze the effectiveness of his preaching, giving attention to content and delivery. Special attention will be given to sermon series, occasional preaching and preaching on Bible books and chapters. Notes 3, 8, 18.

PMM 444   PASTOR, CONGREGATION & SYNOD
This course deals primarily with the kingdom-of-the-left aspects of the pastoral office, the congregation and the synod. Foci are the application of secular principles of organizational management to churches; the organization and structure of congregational life; and the polity of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. All of these are examined in light of the church's overriding mission to preach the Gospel and to administer the Sacraments.

PMM 445   PASTORAL PRACTICE FORUM
This course addresses the issues the student has faced on vicarage and prepares him for his first parish. Two credits. Notes 3, 18.

PMM 446   THEOLOGICAL ETHICS: CONTRASTS AND APPLICATION
Theological ethics, understood from a distinctly Lutheran perspective, are contrasted with a variety of contemporary thought systems. In the context of a pluralistic society, the fundamental biblical principles pertaining to ethics are examined and applied.

 

Elective Courses

PMM P403   OPTIONS IN SERMON FORMS
An advanced preaching elective that presents, critiques theologically and earns experience in using a variety of sermon forms available on the contemporary homiletical scene. Forms include several inductive and narrative options, phenomenological preaching, and others. Note 7.

PMM P404   PREACHING LAW AND GOSPEL
The textual, doctrinal and practical implications of Law and Gospel in preaching. Methods of studying texts in order to preach their Law and Gospel content. Aids in distinguishing Law and Gospel. Note 2.

PMM P411   PREACHING WORKSHOP (SPANISH, SEMINAR)
In this course returning vicars, with the aid of the professors and each other, seek to hone the linguistic, homiletic and pastoral skills needed to proclaim the Gospel to Hispanic listeners. Notes 8, 18.

PMM P420   LITURGICAL STRUCTURES
Critically examines the historical development of basic liturgical structures and the pastoral implications of these structures on today’s liturgies.

PMM P431   CURRENT ISSUES IN CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
This course will be tailored to the sociogram of the class in light of any previous work the instructor and co-learner have done together. Emphasis will be made on flexibility/negotiation and the student’s creative pursuit of a project of his own design. Such issues may also be addressed as moralism, synergism and preconditionalism in conflict with a Law/Gospel base for Christian education; baptism vs. “confirmation”; the inculcation of secularism by default in the public school classroom, etc.; and the case method may be further explored.

PMM P436   CURRENT TRENDS IN MISSIOLOGY
A survey of missiological developments in the 20th century, with specific examination of the contemporary theologies of mission within the Roman Catholic, Evangelical, Ecumenical and Lutheran traditions.

PMM P437   CHRISTIAN EDUCATION IN HISPANIC CONTEXTS
This course builds on the historical and practical foundations of Hymnology I as it teaches the student how to evaluate hymn texts, hymn tunes and hymnals. The major recent hymnals of Christendom will be analyzed as will a sampling of texts and tunes by contemporary hymn writers.

PMM P442   MISSIONARY FORMATION
This course is designed to prepare a person for cross-cultural ministry in any context including non-North American ministry. It includes units on spiritual formation, how-to approaches to language, culture and interpersonal relations, and missionary service as well as area studies. Note 13.

PMM P445   CHRISTIAN SOCIAL ETHICS
The course focuses on the role and function of Christian ethics relative to social problems and issues that concern and affect Christian social responsibility. Special emphasis is given to abortion, birth control, capital punishment, homosexuality, mental “illness” and pollution problems.

PMM P451   LEADERSHIP TRAINING
This course is foundational for the whole area of leadership training for missions.It explores the nature of spiritual leadership development utilizing biblical, cultural and historical perspectives. Concepts helpful in perceiving the dynamics of leadership development such as spiritual authority, sphere of influence, process items, leadership roles, styles, levels, spiritual gifts and others will be examined.

PMM P452   CHURCH PLANTING II
Ideas and methods for church planting in current research and development of use of media, telephone, direct mailing, volunteer organizations, etc., as applied to routine mission sites as well as challenging cross-cultural contexts. Advanced development of methods of communicating the theological motivation for church planting.

PMM P460   PASTOR AS COUNSELOR
Focuses on ways in which the pastor/counselor’s self-understanding contributes to his understanding of the counselee. An examination of counseling from a biblical perspective.

PMM P461   PREMARITAL PASTORAL CARE
This course will introduce students to the rationale behind premarital counseling and acquaint them with some of the literature available to counselors and engaged couples. Students will be made familiar with some of the testing instruments that have been found useful in premarital counseling. Attention will be given to individual couple counseling, premarital counseling and the weekend engaged couple retreat as possible models for parish use. Note 3.

PMM P462   COUNSELING IN THE MODERN WORLD
A course in counseling designed to familiarize the student with problems induced by the rapidly changing conditions in today’s world. Special attention is given to marital counseling.

PMM P463   MARITAL & FAMILY PASTORAL CARE
An examination of the systems approach to marriage and family counseling for the pastor. Attention will be given to the practical aspects of counseling with couples and families.

PMM P469   CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION

PMM P474   SCRIPTURE IN ITS CULTURAL CONTEXT
This course is designed to assist the conscientious student in distinguishing between Christianity and culture and between cultures. The Scripture is the primary textbook, using the case study approach to learning.

PMM P475   THE PASTORAL MINISTRY AND THE AMERICAN LEGAL SYSTEM
This course acquaints students with the American legal system as it impacts the pastoral ministry. Through an examination of constitutional, statutory, administrative and case law, the student gains a general understanding of the law affecting the pastor and the parish. Issues examined include the religion clauses of the United States Constitution, tort and contract liability, criminal liability, and regulatory compliance.

PMM P480   CHRISTIAN ETHICS AND MEDICAL ISSUES
The scriptural and confessional use of Law and Gospel as a basis for and a motivation toward a Christian ethic applicable to some medical issues confronting Christians in the future. Abortion, euthanasia, genetic experimentation and “engineering,” organ transplant, and death are among the topics treated.

PMM P495   INDEPENDENT STUDY
When students wish to fulfill a special need, they may request an independent study course through the department chairman. This is not available to Sem I or Sem II students.

PMM P499   EDUCATIONAL TOURS
Students travel with the instructor to visit sites that are important for the history, theology and growth of the Church. As time and opportunity permit, the instructor will enrich the class by lecturing and leading discussions. Besides visiting the locations, students are expected to complete assigned readings as well as other pertinent oral and written assignments.
