200 LEVEL COURSES
Required Courses
SYT 220 GOD AND CREATION
Second course in the dogmatic sequence. Study of the Trinity, the attributes of God, the creation
of the world and the human race, and the origin and nature of sin. This course sets the
stage for the study of Christ’s person and work on our behalf. Note 1.
SYT 221 CHRISTOLOGY
Third course in the dogmatic sequence. Study of the person of the God-Man Jesus Christ and
His work. The study is based upon Scripture and the historic doctrines of the Church.
Special emphasis on the atoning work of Christ on behalf of the world. Note 2.
SYT 222 CHRISTIAN FAITH AND LIFE
Fourth course in the dogmatic sequence. Study of faith, conversion, justification, sanctification,
final perseverance and the Law-Gospel distinction. Special emphasis on the application
of the finished work of Christ to the believer.
Elective Courses SYT S200 DOCTRINE OF THE WORD
A study of the concept of revelation and of the relation of Holy Scripture to revelation
according to the Bible and in the history of Christian thought.
SYT S223 WORSHIP IN LUTHER AND THE CONFESSIONS
The course seeks to impart a sympathetic understanding of the Reformation’s means-ofgrace-
centered conception of worship at a time when this concept was no longer self-evident.
SYT S230 HISTORY OF DOGMA
Lectures and readings on the treatment of selected major doctrines throughout the history of
the Church. Major themes will vary.
SYT S270 ESCHATOLOGY
A detailed examination of what Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions teach concerning
death, the intermediate state, the second coming of Christ, the resurrection of the dead, the final
judgement, eternal life and eternal death. Contemporary theological issues will be included.
SYT S280 THEOLOGY OF MISSIONS
This course is one part of a four-course emphasis on missions. This course features a systematic
approach integrating the understanding that God wants all to be saved and to come
to the knowledge of the truth within the study of doctrines such as the Trinity, church and
ministry, the kingdom of God, and eschatology to affirm important biblical principles of
missions. It will also evaluate various theologies of missions from a scriptural and Lutheran
point of view.
