Required Courses
SYT 420 GRACE AND SACRAMENTS
Fifth course in the dogmatic sequence. Study of the Holy Spirit at work in the means of
grace, Holy Absolution, and the nature, purpose and administration of the Sacraments of
Holy Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Special emphasis on the relation of the sacraments to
the Christian’s daily life.
SYT 421 CHURCH AND CHRISTIAN HOPE
Sixth course in the dogmatic sequence. Study of the origin and nature of the Church, the
public ministry, eternal election of sinners by God, and the last things. Each of these subjects
will be examined in light of Scripture and the historic teaching of the Church, with
attention to unscriptural errors. Special emphasis upon the life of the Church today.
SYT 422 RELIGIOUS BODIES IN AMERICA
This course provides a Lutheran examination of major religious groups in America today.
Major emphasis on Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Anglican and Episcopal,
Calvinistic, Arminian, and Anabaptist church bodies. Lesser emphasis upon major cults,
New Thought and New Age groups, and 20th century theological trends and organizations.
Elective Courses SYT S429 THEOLOGY OF THE LUTHERAN CONFESSIONS
This course will examine a selection of themes in the Lutheran Confessions such as confessional
hermeneutics, predestination, Christology, the doctrine of justification, church and
ministry, infant baptism, closed communion, consecrationism, church and state. All participants
are encouraged also to raise their own theological topics that they wish to have
addressed. Note 3.
SYT S435 THEOLOGY OF THE ECUMENICAL MOVEMENT
The course will examine the institutional and theological origins of the World Council of
Churches and of the Lutheran World Federation and later developments like the Lima
Declaration of 1982 (Baptism, Eucharist, Ministry). After some initial lectures by the
instructor, course participants will give relevant presentations reflecting their own interest
and research.
SYT S436 CURRENT TRENDS IN THEOLOGY
Beginning with a survey of the Enlightenment, Liberal Theology and Neo-orthodoxy, this
course will examine the theological challenges associated with such names as Bultmann,
Tillich, Bonhoeffer, Moltmann and Pannenberg. Process Theology, Liberation Theology, the
New Age Movement, Feminism and recent developments in Roman Catholicism and
Evangelicalism are also considered.
SYT S480 SANCTIFICATION AND THEOLOGICAL ETHICS
An elective which will examine in detail the following: Lutheran theological ethics distinguished
from casuistry, centrality of justification and sanctification, Law and Gospel analysis
of ethical issues, and pastoral application of the Lutheran ethic to parish situations.
SYT S495 INDEPENDENT STUDY
When students wish to fulfill a special need, they may request an independent study course
through the department chairman. This is not available to Sem I or Sem II students.
SYT S499 EDUCATIONAL TOURS
Students travel with the instructor to visit sites that are important for the history, theology
and growth of the Church. As time and opportunity permit, the instructor will enrich
the class by lecturing and leading discussions. Besides visiting the locations, students
are expected to complete assigned readings as well as other pertinent oral and
written assignments.
