2009 Church Music Workshops
How are the workshops organized?
Each workshop begins with registration on Sunday evening (late registration takes place on Monday morning), and concludes on Friday at noon. Lodging is available in our campus guest dorms, and meals are in Katherine Luther Dining Hall. Daily classes in music skills and theology are part of the curriculum, as well as practice time on the beautiful Schlicker organ in Kramer Chapel. Participants are encouraged to attend the daily campus chapel service(s).
Organist Primer - June 15-19
Kevin Hildebrand -- Organ Instructor
Richard C. Resch -- Theology Instructor
This beginning workshop is designed for organists who do not use pedals, who use only one foot, or who wish to learn more of the basics of service playing. New organists who have been “drafted” into helping at their parish are also encouraged to attend. It will include instruction about how the organ works, “what all those buttons do,” and how to choose appropriate registrations. At a minimum, participants should have proficient keyboard skills. Kantor Hildebrand will demonstrate appropriate and easy service music for the Lutheran organist. A daily study of Lutheran theology will be taught by Kantor Resch.
NEW: Church Music Week - June 22-26
Charles Brown -- Choral Instructor
Janet Muth -- Handbell Instructor
Richard C. Resch and Kevin Hildebrand -- Organ Instructor
Paul Grime -- Theology Instructor
This workshops follows the same format and routine as a typical Organist Workshop, but also is designed for choir and handbell directors. Organists will have Level One instruction with Kantors Resch and Hildebrand, focusing on hymn and service playing “just beyond the basics.” Choir directors will have sectionals with Professor Brown, focusing on how to plan rehearsals, basic conducting skills, vocal instruction, how to teach well in a church choir setting, and how to choose repertoire carefully. Handbell directors and players will have sectionals with Kantor Muth, focusing on ringing technique, rehearsal planning, how to teach and encourage beginning players, and using bells in worship. All participants will have plenary instruction sessions in theology and hymnody, allowing participants to learn and grow together. Choir directors, organists, and handbell directors/players from the same congregation are encouraged to attend together in order to coordinate their professional and theological growth. In addition to building on fundamentals of musicianship, a focus of this workshop will also be how to make solid and practical repertoire choices for your congregation.
