Working with Children and Families

To find out what is available for children and families, just stop by the Children and Family Corner of the library

As a seminarian and as a pastor, you will be working with both children and families. If you are single, you may not know what books children like to read and what videos they like to watch. The library's Children and Family Corner is the place to look for help.

In this corner of the library, you can find many books aimed at a children's reading level. We have always had many of the books, but some of them were included with regular books in the books stacks, and might have been difficult to find. Now you can find them in their own corner of the library.

Here you can find many of the materials that Concordia Publishing House publishes for children or for use with children. Take a look at the large variety of activity books, with cut-and-paste activities, coloring activities, or game activities. These books can be used in Sunday School, for home schooling, or just for fun at home. CPH has recently started publishing several series of books for readers from grade school age through young adult. You can find these series (among others) shelved together in the Children's and Family Corner: Marshal Matt, mysteries with a value; Action readers; Puzzle Club mysteries; Desert critter friends series; Aloha Cove; Elizabeth Bryan mysteries; and Adventure quest.

And, speaking of series, here are some of the non-Concordia series you can find here: The Berenstain bear scouts, The Nancy Drew notebooks, and The Baby Sitters Club. Although you can undoubtedly find these books also at the public library, you can also find and read them here, and discover what young people find appealing today. Most of the books and videos we collect have a Christian focus; we recognize, however, that Christians read books that are not overtly "Christian." Thus, we try to provide a sample of some of these for your understanding.

As videos become more and more a part of our daily lives, we have also provided an array of videos for children. Here you can find animated stories from Nest Family Entertainment, PBS for Kids, Nanny & Isaiah Adventures, and the Goosehill Gang. We are in the process of adding Veggietales, the Donut Man, and Davey and Goliath. All of these videos can be viewed on the television found in the corner, or checked out for thirty days for home use.

And how about periodicals for children? We have, among others, these titles: American Girl, Muse, Zillions, and Cricket.

A large number of the books in this section comes from Concordia Publishing House. CPH sends us a copy of each book they publish so that you, the seminary family, can see what is available from your publishing house. Arch Books have been well known for many years; you can find the complete set together on the shelves on the corner. You can also find devotional material from Concordia, such as Little Visits with God, in this corner.

Books are divided into the following areas: Bibles and Bible stories, Martin Luther, Christmas, Church year, Easter, Prayer books, Missions, Non-English, Devotional, and Sunday School Materials. There is a general collection, divided into groups by reading level. And we have started to provide some periodicals for children and family reading.

In addition to providing the book, video, and periodical collections, we have a weekly story time, conducted by our librarians. We invite the children of faculty, staff, and students to hear stories each week, usually based on the season of the church year.
