Did You Know...

...that new books in the library go first to the New Book Shelf, found near the west end of the main floor of the library? If you can’t find a recently published book (1997 or 1998) on the regular shelves, look on the New Book Shelf.

...that you have access to the holdings of twenty-five institutions besides Concordia Theological Seminary on our computer catalog? Unfortunately, we don’t yet have immediate access to the materials themselves—you must still request them through inter-library loan.

...that your student ID with its barcode can be used at each of the twenty-five other PALNI (Private Academic Library Network of Indiana) institutions to borrow material? You can drive across town to the University of St. Francis or to Taylor University to borrow books. Or, you can drive to Winona Lake in order to borrow books directly from Grace Theological Seminary.

...that there is a telephone for your convenience between the two restrooms on the lower level?

...that the library staff is not omniscient (well, at least not yet)? If you need help—even if you are not quite sure what you need—be sure to ask for help. We are here to serve you?

 Writing That Research Paper

LIBRARY STAFF CAN HELP YOU IN YOUR RESEARCH—IF YOU ALLOW TIME FOR US TO HELP

Do you start your research papers the day before they are due? It’s evening, the day before the due date announced by the professor nine weeks before. You order in a pizza, put on a big pot of coffee, and sit in front of your computer through the night, writing your paper. If this is how you approach your papers, we can’t stop you—but we also can’t help you much.

The library staff at Walther Library can provide you with plenty of resources for completing your paper, but we need time in order to do it. Here’s what we can do if you come into the library several days before your paper is due: we can help you find books about your subject for you to check out. We can help you find journal articles about your subject for you to photocopy. If you start several days before your paper is due, you will then have several days to read the material.

But what if the best book on the subject is not on the shelf? If the book is in storage, we can get it for you by the next day. If the book is missing (that is, the book is not on the shelf where it should be and it is not checked out to anyone), library staff will need several days to try to locate the book for you. When, and if, we find the book, we can notify you. But if you come in the last minute, we won’t have time to look for the book.
