Title:Writing That Research PaperNews & Current Issue Notes fromWalther Library 1998–99 School
Year, Issue #2 (October 1998), p. 2
If the book is not on the shelf because it is checked out, there is still hope. We can place a hold on the book. When the book is returned, we will notify you to pick it up at the library. If the book is due back in the library too late in the quarter to do you any good, we can recall the book for you. We will send a notice to the person who has the book that the book is wanted by someone else. The person who has it must return the book within a week. By the time we notify you, another few days have passed. Thus, you should expect to wait a week-and-a-half after requesting a recall to get the book. If you want time to read the book, you had better start several weeks before your paper is due. As you look for resources, remember that your resources are not limited to what is physically available within the walls of Walther Library. We will gladly request from another library any book or article which you need. This is called inter-library loan. After we receive the book, you can borrow it just as if it had been in the library. A photocopy of a journal article received in this way is yours to keep. But there's a catch: it takes about three weeks of time to get through this process and receive the materials. In some cases, it can take even longer. If you want to have time to read any material after you receive it, you can count back from the due date to find out when to request the material. If you do that, you will find that now is a great time to start looking for material. To have the greatest possible choice of materials to use, you should start your research now. So, here's the deal: if you want to start
the day before your paper is due, we cant help you much. But if you come
into Walther Library now, there is much we can do for you. You can check
with the reference staff or with Rev. Richard Lammert, Public Services
Librarian, for help in locating material in Walther Library or in identifying
material which you can get on inter-library loan. This will include both
books and journal articles. Then you can check with the circulation staff
or with Mrs. Stephanie Bamsch, Access Services Coordinator, for help in
filling out forms for inter-library loan.
NEW STAFF MEMBERS IN THE LIBRARY ARE HERE TO SERVE YOU “BEHIND THE SCENES” Last month, we introduced you to several new staff members who are more visible to the public than the ones you will meet this month. The staff members we write about this month are ones you probably won't see when you are in the library, not because they aren't important, but because they carry on their work “behind the scenes.” If you pause to look through the window behind the circulation desk during the day, you likely will see the new Cataloging Assistant, Mrs. Ruth Gaba, busily working at her computer. Ruth, with her husband Latif, moved to Fort Wayne from Wisconsin last summer, and began working here on July 6. She brings six years of library paraprofessional work experience to the library. In Wisconsin Ruth worked at various libraries, including the central branch of Milwaukee Public Library. She is enjoying the quieter, less demanding atmosphere of a small academic setting. Latif, Ruth's husband, is a Mequon degree completion student who will be matriculating at the seminary in the fall of 1999. You can reach Ruth at x3147. Mr. Terry Quick,
who began work on August 3, brings strong technical skills from his former
work with the Air Force to his position as Information Systems Coordinator.
In his position here, he is involved with building the infrastructure network,
placing computers on the desk of every staff and faculty member and in
the computer learning center, and troubleshooting of both hardware and
software. Terry has two classes left to complete a bachelor's degree in
management communication, which he plans to finish next February. Then
he would like to start work on an M.Div., taking one class a quarter. Terry's
wife of eleven years, Gail, is a licensed interpreter for the deaf. She
was the instructor for Level 1 of the CITI program this summer and is serving
as a CITI secretary. Terry and Gail are the parents of two children, Derek,
9, and Trisha, 8. Terry can be reached at x3146 or x2293.
