Two Women Installed for Work in Library

WOMEN AND NOT ONLY MEN CAN SERVE THE CHURCH IN ECCLESIASTICAL VOCATIONS; WALTHER LIBRARY SHOWS HOW

One of the current hot buttons in Christianity is the role of women in the church. There is a loud contingent for women's ordination as the only fitting recognition for the abilities that women can contribute to Christianity. In response, we at Walther Library are demonstrating that women can contribute vocationally to the church without ordination.

At the opening service of the academic year on September 8, two women were among those installed for service at the seminary. Ruth Gaba was installed as a teacher/librarian, serving as Access Services Librarian, and Linda Smith was installed as a deaconess, serving as Technical Services Assistant.

Both of these women have trained for service in the church. Ruth received a B.A. in Secondary Lutheran Education from Concordia University Wisconsin in 1995, and an M.L.S. (Master of Library Science) from Indiana University Purdue University, Indianapolis, in 2002. Linda received her B.A. from Concordia University, River Forest, Illinois, in 1989, and was consecrated as a deaconess on September 10, 1989. These two women join Deaconess Natalie Sabol, who is serving the seminary as Acquisitions Assistant.

These three women, serving the church vocationally, join the three ordained men on the staff of Walther Library. Men and women, together, serve the church in God-ordained vocations, with the abilities God has given each.

Linda Smith sees her vocation as providing a service to those who are studying to be pastors, providing what they need to do their work. Ruth Gaba has increased in her ability to serve the church with her library science degree. The graduate work has broadened her view of service; she now more easily anticipates problems and is more proactive. As for the work itself, Ruth said, I am doing what I love, and I'm serving the church. What better summary of a church vocation can you get?
