It Begins With Aleph

During the next few months, you may hear some of the library staff muttering about Aleph under their breath. Has the entire staff signed up for Dr. Maier’s summer Hebrew class, and started already to practice the alphabet to get a head start? Or is everyone planning a vacation to Israel?

No to both questions. If you think you have heard the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, though, your hearing is fine. What the staff is talking about is the new integrated library system that we hope to have in place by the beginning of the next school year in September. The new system is manufactured by Ex Libris, and its name is indeed \"Aleph,\" for it was developed in Israel.

For the staff, there is a lot of work to be done between now and the fall. Training sessions on the new system have started, and they run through July. The Walther Library staff will be engaged in moving our data from the current system to Ex Libris Aleph during this time and into August, to prepare for working with the new system. The transition is daunting which is why you may hear the staff muttering under their breath. But the results will be well worth it for all of us. Read more about Ex Libris Aleph in the next article.
