Title:Journals and Periodicals and Zeitschriften-Oh My!LIBRARY STAFF HAVE BEGUN A MAJOR PROJECT TO ASSESS WALTHER LIBRARY’S PERIODICAL COLLECTIONAs you browse the periodical shelving area in Walther Library, you may have noticed gaps in the shelves with this notice posted: “Periodicals in this section removed for assessment.” What you are seeing is the visible part of a behind-the-scenes project begun last fall. The reasons for this project are the following: the printed list of periodicals is not accurate, periodicals are not always shelved by current title, and some periodicals we hold do not serve a seminary community. (We would like to say that we are also solving the problem of having mixes of formats-print, microfiche, and microfilm-but we can’t solve that one.) In this project, three of the library staff (Patty, Richard, and Robert) are working through the periodicals in the collection, title by title, to correct the printed information, to relabel properly any mislabeled volumes, and simply to remove any title that is no longer appropriate for the collection. One change that you might have noticed already is that microfiche are now being shelved in the micro-fiche drawers, not on the periodical shelves. Another change likely to happen by this fall is that the micro-film will move to drawers next to the microfilm/fiche readers. Signs will orient you to any change as it happens. And, speaking of periodicals, we now circulate our juvenile periodicals. Any item in the family corner of the library, book, videotape, cassette, or periodical, can be checked out for thirty days. Bring the periodical issue you want to borrow to the circulation desk, and the circulation staff will place it in a binder for you. This will let them put a date due card with the periodical issue (and the binder will remind you that this is a library periodical, not one of your own).
