Pilgrimage
M A R Y ' S C O R N E R - L I V I N G O F F C A M P U S
by Mary BridgesHere at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, we offer living on campus only to single men. So, I decided to talk to some of our married students/families to see how they feel about living off campus. Here are the questions and responses. I took the liberty of combining some similar responses.
Is housing affordable and plentiful here in Fort Wayne?
"Yes, housing is very affordable and plentiful in Fort Wayne, especially compared with other high-priced housing markets, such as Washington, D.C. (where we are from). We were able to find a very nice, new home (less than five years old) in Fort Wayne. It cost less than half of what our smaller, 50-year-old home sold for in Maryland."
2. Are there benefits to living off campus, and if so, what are they? "It's nice actually to get away from campus after a long day of work/school. It also helps cultivate friendships with people who are not students or sem workers."
"Privacy. You can 'get away' from school for a bit. If you have children, they have their own space. The men can form study groups at each other's houses."
3. Would you recommend this seminary to other couples/families? "Definitely. For us, Fort Wayne is a pleasant change from the congestion and fast pace of Washington D.C. It takes very little time to get around, and the cost of living is so much lower."
"Yes, the Fort Wayne seminary is family oriented. Fort Wayne is a safe, clearly family oriented city. Many supports are given to families at the seminary including the Food and Clothing Co-ops."
4. Do you still feel "connected" to seminary life living off campus? In other words, does the seminary provide ways to help you stay connected, and do you and your family spend time on campus? "I can be as connected or 'unconnected' as I want to be. I receive all the info from Student Wives Association (SWA) and updates in the Blue News. We spend a good deal of time on campus biking, using the gym and track."
"You still spend a majority of your time here on campus, in class, studying, and other activities. However, I feel that being off campus allows for a time of reflection and refreshing in order to prepare you for tomorrow's challenges."
