MARY'S CORNER: FORT WAYNE ... A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE
Mary Bridges, CTS Relocation Coordinator Once upon a time four young men came from a distant land, somewhere near Iowa or Nebraska, I think. They came not knowing what to expect. They thought traveling so far to go to seminary just didnąt make sense. Then something happened. They fell in love with the teachings, the people, the scenery, and they didn't want to leave. Why Fort Wayne? Well, besides being home to Concordia Theological Seminary, the city of Fort Wayne also has much to offer. Fort Wayne: "the city of churches, the summit city, the city of restaurants." Known for the beauty of its parks, like Lakeside Rose Garden, which boasts over 154 varieties of roses; Johnny Appleseed Park & Campground, the memorial place of Johnny Appleseed and home to the festival which bears his name; Franke Park, home of the Children's Zoo and Foellinger Outdoor Theatre; McMillen Park which features an indoor ice arena, a golf course, and more are just a few of the reasons people love Fort Wayne. There are many museums, the Philharmonic, Science Central, and sports. Fort Wayne is home to Komets Hockey, Wizards Baseball, and Freedom Arena Football. And, if you are so inclined, there are many golf courses open to the public. A big plus is that housing is very affordable. In Fort Wayne, rent ranges from $450 to $1,000. There are reasonably priced homes for sale and there are several apartment complexes, over 16 of them within two miles of the campus. Shopping is a delight here. There are over 175 specialty shops in the Glenbrook Mall. Jefferson Pointe offers the Rave Motion Picture Theatre, live music in the summer, carriage rides during the Christmas Season, as well as a plethora of shops from which to choose. Grocery stores are plentiful, with Scottąs, Kroger, Marsh, Wal-Mart, and Meijer stores. Take time to visit and explore the many wonders of this city. Which, did you know, is also the home of the first juke box, washing machine, parking meter, and baking powder. It is an interesting city - come and see for yourself.
