Pilgrimage
By the Rev. Mark C. Sheafer When someone is thinking of enrolling at the seminary as a student in the Master of Divinity or Deaconess Studies program, the first question that is often asked is "How much does it cost?" Counting the cost is a wise thing to do before we undertake any change in our lives, especially one that involves full-time service to the church. The good news is that there is financial help available for those who desire to study to become a pastor or a deaconess. While a seminary education is not tuition-free, most students qualify for some tuition assistance in the form of a grant. Based upon a student’s financial need, the maximum grant available would cover about 60% of the student’s yearly tuition. In specific numbers, that would be about $10,260 granted to cover the yearly cost of $17,100 in tuition (keep in mind there is no flat tuition rate; students are charged only for the credit hours they take). However, there are also books, fees, and living expenses that must be paid as well. In order to help meet all of these costs, CTS students are encouraged to apply for financial aid from their LCMS District, from their home congregation, and also from foundations that offer scholarships. In addition to these sources, students can be adopted by a congregation that will provide them with some financial support. Even with all of these possible sources of financial aid, students must realize that they will probably still have expenses that are not covered. This is where working a part-time job and/or applying for student loans can make up the difference. Student loans are helpful since they do not have to be repaid until after graduation. However, we encourage students not to become too dependent upon loans, which will then burden a future church worker for many years to come. Thinking and planning ahead in regards to finances are very important. I would encourage everyone who is considering enrollment at the seminary to visit the CTS Financial Aid webpage (www.ctsfw.edu/ admission/financial-aid/). Here you will find specific information on seminary costs and how to apply for financial aid. If you have questions, please feel free to call the seminary Financial Aid Office at 260-452-2151. God is gracious and good. All of us are called to be good stewards of the gifts that He provides. Ultimately all of our resources come from Him. Trusting in His grace and making the most of the resources that He provides is the way to approach the cost of attending seminary. The Rev. Mark C. Sheafer is the Assistant Financial Aid Director at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana. From Volume 9, Issue 2, Summer 2006 |
