Manuscripts submitted for publication are subject to peer review and editorial modification; they will not be returned. Please allow several weeks for action on submissions. Any questions regarding the status of an article should be directed to Dr. Charles Gieschen.

II. Form of the Manuscript

Articles are usually submitted as attached files sent by email or on CD. They should be sent both as a Word document (or Rich Text Format, if Word is unavailable) and as a PDF file (so that graphics and foreign alphabets can be compared). A hard copy of the submission should also be sent by regular mail. The type should be double-spaced, 12-point font, printed on one side on standard size paper (8 1/2" by 11"). Footnotes should be used instead of endnotes. The author’s name, title, address, email address, and phone number should appear both in the written communication (email or letter accompanying the manuscript) and at the beginning of the article.

In questions of style, follow the Chicago Manual of Style: The Chicago Manual of Style. 15th ed. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2003.

Every work cited requires a bibliographically complete first reference. Subsequent references are abbreviated, usually by the author’s last name, short title, and page number. Avoid the use of “ibid.,” “idem.,” “op. cit.,” “loc. cit.,” “f.,” “ff.,” “p.,” and “pp.” Be precise in citing page numbers. Please avoid the common confusion between “cf.” and “see” in notes. “Cf.” is confer, which means compare.

Respect for accuracy in verbatim quotations demands that the spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and abbreviations of the original be reproduced exactly, even if they differ from the style of the journal. Should a quotation contain an error, this may be indicated by [sic], at the author’s discretion.

References to the Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions should be in parentheses in the text. All other documentation should be in footnotes. For Scripture abbreviations, see the list below. Abbreviate the Confessional writings as follows: The Augsburg Confession (CA), Apology of the Augsburg Confession (Ap), The Smalcald Articles (SC), Treatise on the Power and Primacy of the Pope (Tr), Small Catechism (SC), Large Catechism (LC), Formula of Concord (FC), Epitome of the Formula of Concord (Ep), and Solid Declaration of the Formula of Concord (SD).

When abbreviating subsequent references to Luther’s Works in footnotes, please use WA for the Weimar edition and LW for the American Edition.

Quotations of five or more lines in any language will be printed as a separate indented paragraph, in smaller type than that used in the body of the article, and without opening and closing quotation marks. Quotations should appear in that fashion in the manuscript.

III. Integrity of the Manuscript

All submissions must properly cite the sources used by the author and be free of any plagiarism. The author is responsible for the scholarly integrity of any submission.
