CTSFW FACULTY ADVANCEMENT AND ADDITIONS

FORT WAYNE, IN, June 16, 2022—The Board of Regents of Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne (CTSFW) is pleased to announce an advancement in rank for the Rev. Dr. Benjamin Mayes and the addition of two new faculty: the Rev. Dr. Jon S. Bruss and the Rev. Dr. Geoffrey R. Boyle.

The Rev. Dr. Jon S. Bruss has accepted the call to serve as associate professor of systematic theology. Dr. Bruss comes to CTSFW from St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Topeka, Kansas, where he has served for the last nine years, seven of them as senior pastor. Bruss received the BA in classics at St. Olaf College, the MDiv from Bethany Lutheran Theological Seminary, and his MA and PhD in classics and philosophy at the University of Minnesota. His first call was to the faculty at Bethany Lutheran College, where he taught and served on the chapel preaching staff for a decade.

Dr. Bruss has served the church on the Concordia University System board of directors, as a circuit visitor, and on various district committees and task forces at the district and Synod levels. He has also worked as a translator on the American Edition of Luther’s Works supplemental series. Bruss’s churchly and higher-education interests intersect most closely in the pre-seminary and seminary training of our church. He is particularly interested in bringing both his long experience in higher education and fresh parish experience to bear on forming the future pastors and churchmen of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Dr. Bruss and his wife, Dr. Kristine Bruss, have one daughter.

The Rev. Dr. Geoffrey R. Boyle has accepted the call to serve as assistant professor of pastoral ministry and missions. Dr. Boyle comes to CTSFW from Wichita, Kansas. “After twelve wonderful years with the saints at Grace and Trinity, watching our family grow and being family to us, we are, nevertheless, looking forward to being a part of the training for other men to enjoy the love given and received in the parish,” said Dr. Boyle. “Of course, it’s not without a bit of fear and trepidation that I return to CTSFW. Many of the professors are still those under whom I sat and who formed me to be the pastor that I am. It’s a humbling joy to be included among them as one of them.”

Dr. Boyle received a BA in history and ancient civilizations and biblical studies from the University of Michigan, MDiv from CTSFW, and PhD in biblical studies (with an emphasis on the Old Testament) from St. Michael’s College, Toronto School of Theology, University of Toronto. Boyle has served on a variety of district and Synod boards and committees, as an adjunct instructor and as chair of the board for Concordia Academy Wichita. Dr. Boyle and his wife, Nicole, have five children.

“Dr. Jon Bruss and Dr. Geoffrey Boyle both bring to the Seminary great theological gifts as well as significant and successful parish experience. In the crucible of service to the people of the church, both men have been shaped according to the suffering of Christ our Lord, whom they will serve in their labor as teachers to the next generation of church workers,” said the Chair of the Board, the Rev. Dr. Scott R. Murray.

The CTSFW Board of Regents also recently voted to grant tenure to Dr. Benjamin Mayes and advance him in academic rank to associate professor of historical theology. Chairman Murray thought this most appropriate as “Dr. Mayes is a world-class scholar who is making the works of Martin Luther accessible to the modern reader in the CPH expansion of Luther’s Works, not to mention editing other Lutheran literature, most notably, John Gerhard’s Theological Commonplaces. Quite beyond this, he is a much-loved professor to whom the students flock.”

President Lawrence R. Rast Jr. further commented: “Our Lord continues to provide for our Seminary in amazing ways. I am thrilled to welcome these men to our faculty and look forward to seeing all that Christ will do through these men for our students, for CTSFW, and for the sake of the broader church. Thanks be to God who does all things well!”

Soli Deo Gloria
