Chaplain Candidate Scholarship Program

Concordia Theological Seminary (CTSFW) is pleased to offer this scholarship in partnership with the Chaplain Candidate program of the U.S. military.  CTSFW reserves the right to limit the number scholarships awarded per year and may limit the total award amount based upon a student’s institutional aid package.  This scholarship will be given only to qualified applicants who must re-apply again each year for consideration.  Applicants must be enrolled full-time in the M.Div. program and be admitted into the U.S. military Chaplain Candidate program.  Should a selected applicant for this scholarship fail to be admitted into the U.S. military’s Chaplain Candidate program within 120-days of matriculation, the student will forfeit scholarship eligibility. Additionally, this scholarship will not be awarded to students who no longer serve in the Chaplain Candidate program.  Selected students must maintain good academic standing and remain in the Chaplain Candidate program for the duration of the scholarship.  The student shall submit documented proof to the CTSFW Financial Aid Office that he has been admitted into the U.S. military Chaplain Candidate program.

Chaplain CSIF (Church, State & Industry Foundation) Scholarship

 A scholarship for those seeking to be called to serve as a Military Chaplain in any of the Armed Forces of the United States of America in any status – Active Duty, National Guard, or Reserve. The purpose and intent of the Chaplain CSIF scholarship is three-fold: 1) to encourage seminarians to become Military Chaplain Candidates, 2) to financially recognize Candidates who have stayed the course and are just now becoming fully commissioned Chaplains, and 3) to encourage qualified civilian clergy to become newly accessioned Military Chaplains.

Ella B. Pelz Pastoral Endowment Fund

Applicants must be at least in their second year of studies at CTSFW in the M.Div. or A.R. Programs and also demonstrate a strict, active commitment to traditional confessional Lutheran doctrine, as drawn from the Holy Bible by the Lutheran Confessions as contained in the Book of Concord and the historic Lutheran liturgy. Ethnic Minority Scholarship

Scholarship funds for ethnic minorities are available at CTSFW, in particular for African American, Asian and Hispanic students who are preparing for church work service in the LCMS.  Please submit the required application form.  Further documentation may be required in some cases.

International Order of the King's Daughters and Sons - Student Ministry Scholarship

Who is Eligible?  United States or Canadian citizen, full-time graduate student attending a school or seminary accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the US or Canada with a grade average of B or better for all undergraduate and graduate courses. An official application must be requested and returned with all material to be considered for a scholarship. Students in good standing may reapply for a scholarship by requesting and submitting a renewal application, along with a resume update, and an official transcript; this material must be submitted by March 1.

LLL California-Nevada-Hawaii District Scholarship

The Lutheran Laymen’s League of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District Student Aid fund provides additional financial resources for persons who fully intend to enter the ministry (deaconess of pastoral ministry) of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. LWML Indiana District Scholarship

The LWML of the Indiana District has scholarships for men and women preparing for full-time church work in the LCMS (pastor, teacher, DCE, deaconess, etc.). To qualify, a student must be a communicant member of a congregation in the LCMS in the Indiana District for at least 18 months. He/she must attend an LCMS synodical school with approved enrollment. Scholarships are issued for a period of one year. A new application must be made each year.

The LWML Iowa East District (IED) has grant money available for seminary students, including deaconess students, who belong to a congregation in the Iowa East District. This is also available to those in their vicarage or internship year. The deadline for submission of the application is May 1.

Mary E. Bivins Foundation Scholarship

Scholarship Purpose: The purpose of the Scholarship Program is to educate ministers to preach the Christian religion. Scholarships are provided for upper-level undergraduate or graduate education that will lead to a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in a field that prepares students to preach the Christian religion.  

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Must be a citizen of the United States of America and a permanent resident of the northernmost 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle. 
  • Must be classified as a college junior or above by the first semester for which the scholarship would be effective. 
  • Must have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or above or a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0 or above. 
  • The degree program selected must prepare the student to preach the Christian religion or enter into vocational ministry.

Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance Scholarship

Applicants include: 1) those who have battled cancer at any point in their lives (not limited to mesothelioma); 2) those who have a parent, sibling, immediate family member, or close friend who has battled or is battling cancer. Scholarship application requirements: 1) must be enrolled full-time at an accredited two-year or four-year university, community college, junior college, or a graduate degree program; 2) this scholarship is offered nationwide to United States citizens; 3) students must be in academic “Good Standing” and have a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher to be eligible. The award amount is $4,000 to a student who has dealt with cancer, personally or within their family, in an effort to help them further their education. Deadlines occur twice a year in March and December.

Myron J. Walker Scholarship

The Department of Religious Studies at the University of Iowa is now accepting applications for the 2023 Myron J. Walker Scholarship through March 31, 2023.  

The Walker Scholarship is awarded to Iowa residents (persons with permanent residence in Iowa) pursuing a career in any faith tradition.  

The award amount is variable, and more than one scholarship can be awarded annually.

Scholarships can be applied for each year.  Previous recipients who re-apply will be considered along with new applicants.

Our Savior Lutheran Church (Granbury, TX) Seminary Scholarship

The purpose of the Our Savior Lutheran Church Seminary Scholarship is to aid those who are preparing for service as pastors in the LCMS and is limited to full-time students entering the second or fourth years of the traditional Master of Divinity four-year program. Students from any LCMS District may apply. The deadline for receipt of the application is May 31 of each year. Scholarship funds will be awarded each July and administered through the seminary. St. John's College Alumni Association

Offered to St. John’s College alumni and former faculty members and their sons, daughters, grandsons, and granddaughters. The application deadline for the next academic year is April 1. The Gil and Blondie Vogt Scholarship Fund

The Gil and Blondie Vogt Scholarship Fund is designed to assist Nebraska District students preparing for LCMS church vocations at any LCMS university or seminary. An applicant for this scholarship must be a current resident of Nebraska; a member of an LCMS congregation; pursuing educational training in preparation for an LCMS-related vocational position; attend a LCMS college, university or seminary; demonstrate a substantial financial need; and must not be in a vicarage year at seminary.

Requests for an application can be made after January 1 for the following school year. Application Deadline is April 15.

Wischer Scholarship

The Irene S. Wischer Education Foundation Scholarship is a renewable scholarship award, and the value is based on the applicant’s demonstrated financial need (not to exceed $11,000 per academic year). The length of renewal eligibility will be commensurate with the length of the student’s course of study. 

To apply for an Irene S. Wischer Education Foundation Scholarship, you must:
a) be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student, or part- or full-time graduate student 
b) be a citizen of the United States of America
c) be a legal resident of the state of Texas for 12 consecutive months before application submission
