Learn with Your Seminary: Musician Workshops Coming Up in June

Kantor Kevin Hildebrand teaches church organist in Kramer Chapel during the 2015 Good Shepherd Institute conference.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (CTSFW)—Concordia Theological Seminary (CTSFW), Fort Wayne, is pleased to announce the annual summer workshops for church organists and pianists of all skill levels. By the end of the workshop, musicians will have gained practical skills that will not only improve their playing but will help them more effectively lead and encourage their congregations in singing.

“Whether it’s helping musicians understand how the instrument works, what sounds and registrations to choose, finding appropriate music to play, playing the pedals more efficiently, or knowing how to introduce a hymn for the congregation and at an appropriate tempo, there’s plenty of practical information for any participant,” Kevin Hildebrand, kantor at CTSFW, explained. “We also tailor our individual instruction to each player’s strengths so that everyone has their own unique strategies for improvement.”

Participants may choose from the following workshops:

Basic Level Organists and Service Playing for Pianists
June 18–22
This workshop covers the basics for those organists who have had very little or no training on how the instrument works, including how to choose registrations and how to play pedals with both feet. Both pianists and organists will learn how to lead the congregational singing of hymns and liturgy through effective playing.

Intermediate & Advanced Level Organists
June 25–29
This workshop is designed for organists who have already learned the basics, but want to improve their skills. Instructors will cover creative hymn introductions, making informed choices about organ repertoire and strategies for leading challenging hymns. Instruction at this level is customized to the ability of each student.
