Event Information

The Good Shepherd Institute of Pastoral Theology and Sacred Music for the Church, an Institute of Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, is pleased to share that the Biennial Exhibition of Sacred Visual Art will be available for public viewing starting October 31 in The Wayne and Barbara Kroemer Library located on the campus of CTSFW.
The theme for the 2022 exhibit, “Mourning into Dancing,” is drawn from Psalm 30:
“You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness” (v. 11).
During the past two years, we have been confronted not only with a worldwide pandemic but also with significant economic, social, and political unrest. With the psalmist we cannot help but pray: “O LORD, be my helper!” (v. 10) The comforting word from God is that he has indeed heard our cry. While weeping may “tarry for the night,” the Christian lives in the confidence that “joy comes in the morning” (v. 5). Or as the theme of our exhibit puts it, God is faithful as he turns our “mourning into dancing.” Such a theme offers artists endless opportunities to depict this great reversal of our God who snatches us from the jaws of death to set us on firm ground. This is the God who draws us out of the pit and sets us on firm ground and puts a new song in our mouth (Ps. 40:1–2), the one who promises that he who sows with tears shall reap with shouts of joy (Psalm 126:5–6).
Other passages of Scripture that speak of similar themes of God turning mourning into dancing include the story of Esther (see in particular Esther 9:22), the prophecies of Isaiah (see 12:1–2; 35:10; 61:3; 65:18–19), and the preaching of Jeremiah (in particular, 31:13). See also Ecclesiastes 3:4; John 16:20; Matthew 5:4, 12; 2 Corinthians 6:10; 1 Peter 1:6–8; 4:12–13.
