Ever since 2017, when the church observed the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, similar anniversaries have begun to present themselves. Last year, for example, marked the 500th anniversary of Luther’s translation of the New Testament into German, the 350th anniversary of the death of Heinrich Schütz, and the 150th anniversary of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ birth. This year in 2023 we celebrate the 500th anniversary of Luther’s first liturgical reforms, and next year, in 2024, we’ll remember the publication of the first Lutheran hymnals.
Remembering the past is beneficial, not only in its own right but also because it informs the decisions we make in the present. At this year’s conference participants will get to participate in presentations, a variety of sectional topics, and wonderful worship opportunities. It is through these opportunities that the Institute will carry on its mission of addressing matters of worship, church music, and pastoral theology.
